Ash Cloud results in the most Flight cancellations since the 9/11 terrorist attack
Iceland’s volcanic activity caused flight delays all across Europe leaving hundreds of thousands of travelers stranded as air traffic control sorts out strategies to get these passengers where they need to go. With volcanic ash 5 miles into the air this unexpected trip interruption shuts down one of the world most congested air spaces in the world. Aviation experts say flight delays could continue for several days.

The Ash cloud shut down London’s five major airports including Heathrow, a major trans-Atlantic hub that handles over 1,200 flights and 180,000 passengers per day. Airport shutdowns and flight cancellations spread eastward across Europe — to France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, Sweden, Finland and Switzerland — and the effects reverberated worldwide.
Not to mention French officials shut down all flights to Paris and surrounding destinations.
In the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration said it was working with airlines to try to reroute some flights around the massive ash cloud. Nevertheless travelers are going to have to be patient.
